Governor Pen Portraits

Mel Barker :

Mel Barker

My name is Mel Barker and I have worked as a teacher for the last 24 years, 18 of those years have been in a Middle School. I am very passionate about Middle Schools as I was educated through the 3 tier system myself.

I am delighted to be able to share my skills and knowledge on the governing body here at Monkseaton Middle. Prior to joining the school, I was a governor at my own children’s school for 8 years, 6 of those I had the added responsibility of being Chair of Governors. I have a genuine desire to effect change for the benefit of our children and to ensure they receive the best education possible. My expectations of the school are high while remaining realistic at all times.

In my spare time I enjoy attending spin class 5-6 times a week and attending to my allotment although most of my spare time is spent supporting my own 2 children in their ever increasing out of school activities.

Hannah Cleugh :

Hannah Cleugh

My name is Hannah, and I have been vicar of St Peter's Church in Monkseaton since 2021. I live here in Monkseaton with my husband, little girl, and a spaniel. I have been a governor at Monkseaton Middle School since spring of 2022, and Chair of Governors since September 2022. I am also a governor at Appletree Gardens First School.

I grew up in the north-east, but have studied and worked variously in Oxfordshire, Durham, and most recently Cambridgeshire. Ever since I was ordained (now more than 15 years ago), I have been involved in schools and have previously been a governor both in Church of England maintained primary schools, and in the independent sector. Being a governor is a good way of really getting to know a school and serve it and through it the wider community, and is very rewarding. Some of it is very serious - for instance, I am the safeguarding link governor and there is nothing more important than keeping our children safe - but it can also be great fun. It is wonderful seeing our amazing young people thriving and achieving in so many different ways.

My ideal day off is a long walk, tea and cake, and then a good book.

Beverley Byford :

Beverley Byford

I am new to being a parent governor and have undertaken the role for two years now, I have two children at Monkseaton middle and my main motivation in volunteering for the role was to be able to positively influence the school which is playing a key role in their lives.

Being a governor has given me a unique insight into the challenges of running a school in 2024 which are numerous but I have been amazed by the passion and dedication of everyone involved in Monkseaton Middle School who make it a great place to send children to ensure they learn in a caring supportive environment.

I grew up around the coast on Marden Estate and although I briefly lived in Morpeth I only really feel at home by the sea where all of my family are. I have three children in total my youngest being about to enter school nursery and a small Pomsky who loves walks on the beach. I work as a delivery manager within DWP helping to ensure our digital services are safe and easy to use which allows us to support some of the most vulnerable people in society.

Duncan Phin :

Duncan Phin

I am Duncan Phin, a dedicated professional with over 15 years of experience in analytics, culture, and engagement. My professional journey is marked by extensive work with the Northern Learning Trust, where I have volunteered for over a decade. In this role, I have been instrumental in fostering strong connections between the business sector and educational institutions. My efforts have not only bridged gaps but also created opportunities for mutual growth and development. Through my work, I have facilitated numerous partnerships that have enriched the educational landscape, providing students with real-world insights and experiences that enhance their learning journeys.

With a strong foundation in analytics, I excel at interpreting complex data to drive strategic decisions. My expertise in this area has been pivotal in implementing effective solutions that improve organizational culture and boost employee engagement. My analytical acumen, combined with my ability to foster a positive and inclusive work environment, has consistently led to enhanced performance and productivity within the teams I have led.

I am passionate about leveraging my extensive knowledge and experience to help schools grow and develop. I believe that by applying analytical rigor and fostering a culture of engagement, educational institutions can significantly improve their outcomes. My commitment to this cause is reflected in my proactive approach to mentoring and collaborating with educators and administrators, always striving to create a supportive and dynamic learning environment.

Jane Lowe :

Jane Lowe

My name is Jane and I live in Whitley Bay with my husband, three boys and two bouncy Labradors, Lily and Elda. My son Charlie previously attended MMS, which was a hugely positive experience, and I was keen to help the school in any way that I could.  I have 22 years teaching experience, including 6 years as a SENCO at a school in outer London.  I am also a qualified forest school leader and previously worked with home educated children.

Currently I work for the Key Support Services in the Governance section, supporting schools and Trusts. When not working or looking after the family, I like walking the dogs on the beach, camping. Music and yoga. I am passionate about education and am excited to be able to support the vision and ethos of MMS as a co-opted governor.

I find being a governor a hugely rewarding experience and would encourage anyone interested to ask for more information.

Margaret Grimmer :

Margaret Grimmer

I have lived in Whitley Bay for 35 years. I am a retired high school Science teacher. I have three adult children who were educated in the Whitley Bay pyramid and two grandsons at a local primary school. I was a parent governor when my children were at high school and served for 10 years as a Local Authority governor in a high school in the borough until recently.

I identify strongly with the ethos of Monkseaton Middle school and the way in which they seek to serve the wider needs of children in their local community. I am dismayed by the inequality I see growing all around me and am keen to do what I can to ensure children get what they need to thrive and find their place in the world.

I am also interested in curriculum development and, through that, broadening the horizons of our young people and helping to raise their aspirations.

In my spare time I am happiest helping to look after my grandsons and walking the family dogs.

Stuart Boswell :

Stuart Boswell

I live in Backworth with my wife, daughter, and dog. My two daughters used to attend Monkseaton Middle School, so I have quite a long history with the school and am keenly interested in seeing the school flourish.

I have served as school governor for over 10 years, with both this school and my daughter's previous school, so bring a lot of experience to the governing body.

I used to manage nightclubs, but now find myself with more time on my hands due to illness and disability, therefore have decided to study a BA in history, part-time, with the Open University.
